Croissance et qualité de l'huître ceuse Crassostrea gigas dans le bassin de Thau (Hérault) : Résultats d'une étude réalisée en 1990-1991 ArchiMer

During years 1990-1991, a study was carried ouI in order to precise the relationship between sorne physiological features and the biochemical characteristics of dry flesh and hemolymf of oyster Crassostrea gigas, cultivated in the mediterranean lagoon of Thau. Growth rates and biochemical analysis for proteins, lipids and carbohydrates were estimated. The results of this study are given. They include many other data from a study on trophic relationships developed between 1985-1989.

La "malaïgue" de l'été 1990 dans l’étang de Thau ArchiMer

In summer 1990, Thau, a Mediterranean lagoon was affected by a dystrophic crisis. An aerial survey was performed to observe polluted areas. The analysis of the main environmental water conditions have shown that suspended organic matter plays an important part in the development of this dystrophic crisis.

L'oxygène en été dans l'étang de Thau. Contribution à l'étude du risque de "malaïgue". Année 1989 ArchiMer

The mediterranean lagoon of Thau is subject to dystrophic crisis leading to mortalities of the shells grown there. This study shows that the risk for such a crisis is permanent during the Summer. Disappearing of oxygen, mainly tabes place in the breeding areas and near the bottom because of the concentration of shells and the abundance of biodeposit. A correlation is shown between the level of the oxygen in the water and the speed of the wind which is the main factor of balance.

Matière en suspension et sédimentation dans la lagune de Thau ArchiMer

Thau is a mediterranean lagoon with a large productive stock of molluscs (oysters, mussels) cultivated on suspended tines and colonised by epibionta (ascidia and others invertebrates, algae, etc ... ). This study was developed as part of the PNOC-OXYTHAU.programme. Its aim was to analyze the effects of oyster farrning on water-mass surrounding structures loaded with suspended molluscs and proximal watermass separating these structures. This study concems particulate suspended matter and deposits of particulate organic matter on the bottom after sedimnentation. Biochemical measurements were carried out for nitrogen, carbon,  proteins, lipids and carbohydrates. ln order to estimate sedimentaton, bottom sediment traps were used

Observations sur la biologie de l'algue japonaise Undaria pinnatifida (harvey) suringar introduite accidentellement dans l'étang de Thau ArchiMer

En février 1971, un ostréiculteur apportait pour détermination au Centre de l'Institut Scientifique et Technique des Pêches Maritimes a Sète une algue de grande taille qu'il observait pour la première fois dans l'étang de Thau. Il s'agissait de l'espéce Undaria pinnatifida, originellement endémique des côtes japonaises, introduite accidentellement en France sans doute avec du naissain d'huitres en provenance d'Extrème-Orient. Loin de s'effacer face a la concurrence des algues vertes pourtant dans l'étang de Thau fort prolifiques, telles que Codium, Enteromorpha, Ulothrix, Chaetomorpha, Undaria a étendu progressivement son aire de répartition. Relations milieu-ressources : impact de la conchyliculture sur un environnement lagunaire méditerranéen (Thau) ArchiMer

Shellfish farming leaves its mark on the environment in which it has developed, and the men who depend upon it. These changes have altogether balanced the lagoon cycle and have caused disastrous episodic events. Increased water c1arity caused by the uptake of particulate material by shellfish farming allows seagrass to grow in deeper areas of the lagoon (down to five metres). Shellfish farming nutrient transformations increase ecosystem productivity, even if the filtration pressure keeps phytoplankton biomass at a low leveI. Storage of phosphorus and nitrogen in animal tissue limits eutrophication in this ecosystem. Transfer of oysters from growout facilities increases animal and vegetal specific diversity.
